1750-1775: Sylvan Kolesnikov from Ekaterinoslav province appears as the first known Doukhobor leader. He adopts the views of the unknown wanderer who proclaimed pacifism and opposition to official spiritualism and to ikon worship. 1900 - This remarkable event gave rise to some absurd speculations, some by the D’s themselves. One such theory offered the speculation that Queen Victoria gave ‘permission’ for the D’s to inhabit Canada, and gave exemption from military service for one hundred years.

1901 - Canadian government serves notice that Doukhobors now require individual homestead entry. Although the Doukhobors arrived with a guarantee of ‘land in a bloc’, and control of internal affairs, the government exerted presure for individual registration from the very beginning.
